First the heart has four chambers, 2 atria and 2 ventricles. The left side carries oxygenated blood from the lungs to the body while the right carries deoxygenated blood from the body to the lungs.
During embryo development the heart begins to form as a sac without the chambers then with time its compartmentalized by membranes/septum.
However in certain cases the setum can fail to form completely or partially. Hence there is way for oxygenated and deoxygenated blood to mix in the heart. This is the Ventricular septal defect or atrial septal defect. Its purely a congenital defect.
Symptoms include fatigue, breath shortness, skipped heartbeats, stroke, body swelling
