Our vocal cords make sounds when we pass air through the vocal chords, forcing them apart and back together, thus making multiple vibrations at a certain frequency, and this creates what our human ear perceives as the sound of our voice. So, maybe that is different when singing vs when talking?
As for softening it? I’m not sure how to change it? One approach would be to learn how to sing well with the high pitched voice..it might increase your range, thus making you a more versatile singer!
